Plaid Cymru gains Llanegwad ward in County Council by-election

Plaid Cymru chalked up another County Council victory with the election of Mansel Charles for the Llanegwad Ward of Carmarthenshire County Council.

Mr. Charles, a local candidate and well respected volunteer in the community, defeated Independent candidate John Pugh.

Councillor Mansel Charles said:

“I would like to thank the electors of the Llanegwad ward for the faith they have shown in me by electing me as their County Councillor. It is a great honour to represent my home communities. I will champion our communities and promise to always put them first for as long as the people have faith in me.”

Cllr. Peter Hughes-Griffiths, leader of the Plaid Cymru Group on the County Council said:

“This is an excellent result for the communities in the Llanegwad ward and for Carmarthenshire County Council as a whole. The confidence shown in Mansel will send shock waves through the Independent and Labour controlled council. The election of yet another Plaid councillor will now change the political balance of a number of committees within the local authority. Plaid Cymru will continue to stand up for the communities of Carmarthenshire and with a few more wins like this at the 2012 elections, we will be able to bring decent local government back our county.”

Jonathan Edwards MP added:

“Mansel has dedicated many years to the communities of the Llanegwad ward. His election is a rejection of the undemocratic way the Labour and Independent council executive is running our local authority. Mansel will undoubtedly be a great asset in the County Council.”

Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM concluded:

“I’m extremely pleased for Mansel on his successful election. The result is a testament to years of work in the area and sends a clear message to the Independent-Labour run council. I look forward to working with Mansel over the coming months.”
